Genioplasty chin surgery Brisbane

What is Genioplasty (Chin surgery)

Genioplasty is a surgical procedure used to change the shape and position of your chin. Genioplasty can be used to treat a small, receded chin, large overprotected chin, asymmetric chin, a narrow or wide chin.

Dr Oztel completes bone surgery to change the appearance of your chin, rather than silicone or other chin implants. A surgical approach is a reliable and predicable way to change the appearance of your chin. Whereas silicon and chin implants have higher risk of infection, may move over time and appear less natural for some patients.

Some patients may present with more advanced underlying issues and may have jaw misalignment such as an overbite or underbite. These conditions may require orthognathic surgery (corrective jaw surgery) to give you the most cosmetic, natural and functional result.

Dr Oztel works with specialist orthodontists to treat these surgical conditions and can speak to you about this at your consultation.

What to Expect From Your Appointment

Dr Oztel will take a thorough history and comprehensive examination, review your x-rays and CT scan and may order further investigations if required. He will then discuss your cosmetic and functional goals to determine how genioplasty may benefit you.

Dr Oztel uses modern techniques to perform your genioplasty including 3D virtual surgery planning and custom titanium plates that are tailored specifically to you.

How is Genioplasty Performed?

Genioplasty surgery is performed under general anaesthetic in a hospital setting.

Dr Oztel performs genioplasty through a small incision hidden inside the mouth. He then uses surgical guides to cut through the anterior mandible (chin bone), to separate and reposition it into the desired position. He then secures this in place by using your custom-built titanium plates. Dr Oztel uses stitches to close the wound inside the mouth that take between 2 to 3 weeks to dissolve.

What Can You Expect After Surgery?

Recovery time after Genioplasty depends on your age, medical conditions and complexity of the surgery performed. Most patients will require between 4 to 7 days off work. Initially, you may have a dressing over the chin to ensure the skin, muscle and soft tissues heal in the best possible and most cosmetic way. This dressing can usually be removed over the next 48 to 72 hours.

Following surgery, it is normal to experience some pain, swelling and discomfort. These symptoms can by managed through rest, pain relief and applying cold compress. Depending on the complexity of your procedure, your symptoms may subside within a few days, or up to one week. A soft diet is required for short period post-surgery.

If you have any questions or concerns in the post-operative period, Dr Oztel will be available to discuss these with you.
